THE QUANTUM COMPUTER
From the first computers to the latest super-computers, from the first big phones to the new smarthphones, the electronic technology has became one of the most important field of the scientific research. Thanks to the invention of the transistor, in Bell Labs by the scientist Walter Brattain and John Bardeen, and then of the microprocessor unit by Intel, IBM, Fairchild, National Instruments, Apple, AMD, the life of billion of people has changed. In the last 50 years the artificial intelligence has increased exponentially.
At the beginning there were only very big computer, made with very inefficiently transistors and electronics components, but today there’re microprocessors made with billions of electronic components able to do over 100 million of operations pro second that are used in every electronic devices, computer, appliances, phones, digital watches and music players.
Many of these are very powerful, but a new technology is developing in universities around the world. This is the quantum computer. On the contrary of traditional computer, that work with two states of bits (0 and 1), the quantum computer uses the qubit. It uses the complex algorithm of the quantum mechanics to process big data struct.
These qubits can represent a one, a zero, or any quantum superposition of these two qubit states. Thanks to this particular quantic phenomenon a series of qubits can represent a superposition of quantic states equal to 2n. Doing particular operations like encrypting data and statistic calculations, the quantum computer is very faster than normal computers, thanks to the advanced technology, but doing arithmetic operations they have the same performance.
The idea of quantum computers was of the physicist Richard Feynman in the 1982 thinking about the properties of the quantum mechanic. In the next years a lot of scientist studied this possibility to use elementary particles to process data. The first real quantum computer has been built by the D-Wave Systems using phosphors atoms over a layer of silicon and it has been sold for many billions dollars. In 2013 it was commercialised and today, the most important firms like Google and Nasa, have bought one of these. The last model, builded by D-Wave System in a partnership with Google and Nasa, the D-Wave Two, is powered by 512 qubits and probably this new technology will became a new way to do new computers with an unlimited power.
